Best Swedish website

Update: The 25th of November the site got even better.

Skatteverket (Swedish), where I work was elected the best Swedish government website this year by the Internetworld magazine. Today we are celebrating with cake :D Take note that the site do not follow web standards, is using frames, do not validate and have a lot of accessibility problems :( These are things that we are working with and will fixed.

The site was elected from these five criteria.

* The use of internet in a new creative way
* The quality of the content
* Structure and navigation
* Design
* Clear sender (remitter)

A loose translation.

The web is Skatteverkets best window. Swedens best government website has an easy and clear design that makes it easy to find. Web services as skattejämkning, company registration, electronic income-tax lets Skatteverket do a clean sweep compared other government websites. The site makes use of the interactive parts of Internet for the electronic services as calculating tax, tax values and car benefit values. The huge form- and brochure archive is great for for people who like order and their contact form by mail is effective.

    Excellent! Just fix the code and you’ll be there! I hope accessibility will be considered as a success criteria i the near future.

    Congratulations!

    This is an interesting reflection. I guess the only ones that care about (or are loud enough to express their opinion) standards code and accessibility are us bloggers/standards web developers…

    Thanks, the cake was excelllent. I do agree, hopefully web standards and accessibility will be an criteria in the future or even better, it is such a common thing that it does not need to be an criteria. But that is probably just wishful thinking.

    Congrats Jens!

    My opinion is that there should ony be one criteria for this kind of competitions: usefulness. There are numerous bad web standards compliant sites and numerous good web standard compliant sites. The same goes for design and accessibility.

    So a combination of usability metrics (like success rate, satisfaction and time to complete tasks) and the number of returning visitors should be the criteria. Then, how to measure this in a cost-effective way is another question.

    (Please Jens, take away this stupid mouse cursor for forms, its impossible to select a position within the text with it.)

    Very well done, it is more often than not that I see poorly designed websites here in the US, and with that I don’t mean ugly layouts, graphics, long load times, etc, but accessibility is near impossible, i.e. you are not able to navigate easily throughout the site and if you are looking for information, sometimes something as simple as contact information, you are lucky if you find it within the first 60 minutes - that is, if you did not already give up and go to a competitor’s website. I am expecting the new “Skatteverket” page to look a lot nicer and more standardized with you on the team, you go dude!
