KHTML on Windows part II
EDIT: There is now a part III of this article.
I wrote an earlier post about getting an KHTML on windows (win32), quite a lot of steps. I have now found a much easier way.
## Qemu
Qemu is an computer emulator, like Wmware or PearPC.
First download Qemu and install it to the default location.
## Knoppix
Download the latest version of Knoppix (This version is a Qemu version), torrent. I used the this file:
KNOPPIX_V3.8.1-2005-04-08-EN-qemu-0.6.1-2.iso
Move the ISO file into the same folder as Qemu (C:/Program Files/ Qemu/).
## Post installation
Under Windows Start > Programs should you see a new entry. Click on the QemuMenu, a dos window should open.
Enter C and then Enter. Drag your ISO file into the dos window. Hit Enter. Then Y for making this ISO file bootable.
Enter Q for quit and then space. The dos window should close.
Open a dos window (Start > run > cmd). Go to the place where you installed Qemu (CD c:\”Program Files”/Qemu/).
Enter qemu.exe -L .\bios -cdrom knoppix.iso (See that the name of the ISO file is correct).
A new window should open. Click on it and hit Enter (The default language is English but the first text is in German)
Wait, the boot process takes some time.
The Knoppix system should boot up to desktop by it self, when done, a Konqueror (KHTML) window opens up, just hit your URL in the address bar, voilà.
The networking worked for me right away. As I have been fiddling around with other emulators it might because of it. Could anyone else confirm that the networking works out of the box?

Thanks to your instructions, I was able to get konqueror up and running in about 5 minutes. Got my web site tested on a khtml browser, which is what I wanted to do. I’m writing this from withing the knoppix os right now.
Host os is windows xp sp2
512mb ram

The knoopix boot up went well. I had a KDE desktop up in minutes. Konqueror loaded my web pages fine, so the network connections must have been there, however traceroute only picked up the host o/s IP address.
Thanks for making this information available, it has been a great help

Great, nice to see that it worked well for you.

fixxxer: Yes, it is very slow, I agree. That thing I cannot do anything about. As it is an emulator it is slow. I only see this as an option when you do not have an spare computer to install Linux on.

Jag måste säga att det känns skummt att emulera linux på windows…
Tack för ett bra tips i alla fall.
På denna sidas DOMän kan man nästan tro att du är intresserad av Star Wars, kan det stämma!? :-p

Hehe, I know, but it’s great feeling. The name is mix between the “jedi” from the Starwars movies and sthlm is for living in Stockholm, Sweden. Yeah, I’m a fan of the Starwars, but have not seen the last movie that is now on the cinemas.

You can get it to run faster by getting a non-emulated version of X and KDE installed directly on windows; see the instructions at:
http://kde-cygwin.sourceforge.net/
note, the recommended method would be to goto http://www.cygwin.com and get the setup tool. Then install from the internet with the mirror ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/sources.redhat.com/cygwin [the recommended mirror at http://kde-cygwin.sourceforge.net/install isn't very reliable]
Any missing packages should be gotten from any other cygwin mirror. I recommend you get yourself bash and less as well.
my konquerer.exe complains a little, but it does run. There is no flash plug in of course.

Daniel: Thanks for the tip. I’ll try that out and see how it works.

I know about the broken layout glitch. The problem is that I have been out of internet for 2 months and have not been able to fix this problem. As soon as I get my connection up and running I´ll fix this. Thanx for reminding me

Absolutely fantastic!! The speed reminds me of running IE5.5 on an old P90, but for website testing purposes, this is simply excellent!
One small change - I downloaded the QEmu installer used here from http://free.oszoo.org/download.html - it worked perfectly with a standard Knoppix iso (V4.0.2 2005-09-23)

Stuart: Thanks for pointing out about the broken links. Yeah a P90 is a good comparison.

I’m still interested in joining a project for khtml for win32 if one is active, or in startting one if not. Does anyone know about the status of any such project?

Dick: the Sourceforge project seem to be down. But I found a thread dated Nov. -05 so it seems that some people are working on something. Check this out.

Qemu can be speeded up by using the Qemu accelerator module - also available from the qemu site. Its noticeably faster when you do….
